Online Safety, Why Do We Use Avatars?

At iGifted School we are often asked why it is that we use avatars for our students.  The answer is simple, to encourage intellectual risk and to ensure online safety for our students.  I want to share our thinking about online safety and how we implement it.

As a student registers for any of our programs, we require that they create and name an avatar, and you will see examples above of their work.  Once we approve the avatar, the student is registered in the name of the avatar, and from that point forward is known to other students and teachers as the avatar.  However that is only the first step.

Fearless Learners and Explorers

Fear of technology is not an emotion that registers with the children of the world today. Kids teach themselves by exploring, using and, yes, fixing devices without a computer degree and without adult supervision.  Sounds pretty preposterous, right? I know.

I am constantly amazed by the barriers to education that we create or allow to exist.  Preparing today's students to analyze and eventually solve the problems of the future would seem to be an obvious goal of education today.  The ability to apply critical thinking about the evidence available to them is a vital skill.

Evidence, how to validate it, qualify it, and use it is a key product of the ctitical thinking skills we need to pass on to the students of today  A recent blog has energized our team toward the subject of evaluating and qualifying evidence in an ethical fashion.

iGifted School selects Moodle as online learning environment.

Moodle - Learning Management SystemAfter researching the market of online learning environment software, we have decided that a Moodle learning environment would best suited our needs in producing and publishing content, creating quizzes and surveys for our club members and challenge students in group discussion forums.

The ease  of use for the teachers and club moderators, the comprehensive feature list and the maturity of the software had great appeal. In the spirit of open knowledge sharing and collaboration being part of a generous open-source community with members around the world, also fits the culture of iGifted School.

Once the site is completely set-up, and example club content can be provided, we will notify our friends, followers and benefactors with more indepth updates about the progress of the clubs and the students.

If you'd like to be notified when updates occur, please sign up for our e-mail subscription list in the side bar.
